Steven B. Smith was born and raised in Utah. He studied photography and completed a BFA at Utah State University and received an MFA at the Yale School of Art. He is the recipient of a Guggenheim and Aaron Siskind Fellowships and was recently awarded 2nd annual First Book Prize for Photography by the Honickman Foundation and the Center for Documentary Studies at Duke University. His monograph The Weather and a Place to Live: Photographs of the Suburban West was published by Duke University Press. His photography can be found in many public and private collections: including the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Yale Gallery of Art. He has been a photography instructor at Yale University and Brown University. He currently lives in Providence, Rhode Island where he is a professor in the photography department at the Rhode Island School of Design.
